What you'll need to begin creating extensions

Creating your own extension is exciting, you're essentially adding functionality to an already awesome platform and improving it for everyone who uses it.

Creating an extension, however, is not quite as simple as dragging in blocks of code and there is some prior knowledge required.

To begin creating extensions you will need a beginner to intermediate knowledge of Java, this guide will not teach you how to program but rather, how to use your programming knowledge and adapt it to the App Inventor environment.

If you need additional resources to begin learning Java the following are a few places around the web which may help you.

You will also require your own personal computer as we will need to install various software and other dependencies to get your environment ready for extension development.

Once you are confident to proceed, we'll start off by installing all the required software, tools, and other dependencies, click here to continue to lesson 3.
